Constipation is one of the most common symptoms encountered by paediatrician or gastroenterologist. Most children have functional gastrointestinal disease, only 5% suffer from organic disorder. The authors present an overview of current knowledge of diagnostics and treatment of functional constipation in childhood based on current evidence-based recommendations of the European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (2014). Taking into account current recommendations, the first line osmotic laxative is polyethylene glycol (PEG, macrogol), which is effective and safe in both the disimpaction and maintenance treatment of childhood constipation.
