Thrombocytopenia is defined as platelet count < 150 x 109/l. Purpura is the most common presenting symptom. Child with newly diagnosed severe thrombocytopenia with or without spontaneous haemorrhage should be admitted for further investigation and treatment. It is necessary to determine whether the cause of thrombocytopenia is failure of platelet production (bone marrow disorder) or increased platelet consumption/destruction in peripheral blood or sequestration of platelets from the circulation. Management and treatment of thrombocytopenia depend on underlying condition.
