The article reviews in vitro oocyte maturation and its place in assisted reproduction techniques and in vitro fertilisation programmes. It represents a progressive technology that allows us to treat effectively patients with poor response to ovarian stimulation and those at high risk of ovarian hyperstimulation. The method is suitable particularly for patients with polycystic ovary syndrome where the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation is very high. By using in vitro oocyte maturation we can treat patients with polycystic ovary syndrome immediately without previous treatment with insulin sensitisers or laparoscopic scarification of ovaries.
