Combined hormonal contraception, mainly its estrogen part, can have adverse effect on metabolism of sacharides and lipids. Combination of abdominal obesity, hypertension, atherogenic dyslipidemia and impaired glucose metabolism - metabolic syndrome - is present worldwide and in Slovakia in about 1⁄4 of adult population. Absolute cardiovascular risk in young healthy women is low, however, presence of risk factors can it make significantly worse. Hormonal contraception can increase blood pressure, level of triglycerides and insulin resistance, while it doesn’t influence LDL cholesterol level. This risk is even worse in patients with combination of polycystic ovary syndrome and metabolic syndrome.
