Due to increasing number of patients with implantable pacemakers and cardioverter-defibrillators, attending physicians
and specialists not particularly engaged in arrhythmology face more often the need for preparing these patients
for procedures with a risk of electromagnetic interference with the implanted device (especially during surgical interventions)
or for ensuring a safe course of such procedure. This article sums up basic knowledge and steps required for
appropriate pre- and perioperative management of these patients allowing to safely master most of surgical interventions
without the need for imminent intervention of a pacemaker specialist.
