A case of fetal varicella syndrome following maternal varicella with mild clinical course in 18th week of gestation is analyzed. The newborn developed characteristic cutaneous lesions, sensoneuronal impairment (hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, chorioretinitis and hypoplasia n. II) typical for fetal varicella syndrome. The risk for transplacental transmission of varicella virus is about 3%. This case highlights the danger of fetal impairment of non-immune pregnant women who acquired varicella during pregnancy.
