Shoulder dystocia is an unpredictable, unpreventable, serious and emergency obstetric complication. Early detection and adequate use of necessary obstetrical manoeuvers is very important to reduce the risk of neonatal injury by shoulder release. The authors describe the risk factors, course, and management and consequences of shoulder dystocia. The authors also emphasize the need of perfect documentation, because the consequences of this complication are often causing litigations.
