The article examines the prevalence of Streptococcus agalactiae in the population
of pregnant women. Despite the fact they are a natural part of streptococci microbial
flora of mothers, they pose a serious risk to newborns. Epidemiologically, colonization
of pregnant women is given in the range of 10 to 40 %. Our prevalence rates
of streptococcus in a population of women, pregnant women and newborns are
significantly lower compared to other surveys. The reason is not only asymptomatic
course of infection, but also neglected preventive care. The article deals with resistance
to four most commonly indicated antibiotics, penicillin, erythromycin, clindamycin
and tetracycline. The resistance of the last was the highest. Appropriate
antibiotic prophylaxis in addition to the screening, is a base for prevention of early
sepsis in newborns.
