FETAL HEART RATE MONITORING USING ABDOMINAL FETAL ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHY

Cardiotocography is a routine and the most widespread method of fetal monitoring
during pregnancy and labour nowadays. Other frequently used methods include ultrasonographic
blood flowmetry, intermittent auscultation, or direct fetal electrocardiography,
where the fetal heart signal is obtained by attaching a scalp electrode
to the head or buttocks of the fetus. Although the fetal heart signal was first recorded
using the abdominally placed electrode in 1906 by Cremer, and the idea of using
a noninvasive fetal electrocardiography is more than 100 years old, this method
played only a small role in modern obstetrics. However, recent studies indicate a possible
change.
