Breast cancer is one of the most serious female diseases. The cause of mortality is
associated with the development of metastases. Tumour cells can detach from primary
tumour in early stages of the disease. These disseminated cells can both immediately
start to create metastases in distant tissues or enter the state of dormancy
from which they can be activated many years later and be the cause of relapse.
The aim of modern research is the development of methods for detection and identification
of disseminated cells, because they are a valuable source of prognostic information
and the possibility to monitor the success of therapy. The development of
new targeted treatment strategy could have given hope, that once breast cancer will
become curable.
