OBESITY AND PREGNANCY

Z. LAUČEKOVÁ, M. ŇACHAJOVÁ, E. KOZUBÍK, I. KAPUSTOVÁ, K. BIRINGER

Obesity is the most common health complication in women of reproductive age. Obesity in pregnancy causes both short and long-term negative consequences for both mother and child. It causes infertility and early pregnancy spontaneous abortions and congenital anomalies of the fetuses. From a metabolic point of view, obese women have increased insulin resistance in early pregnancy, which is clinically manifested in late pregnancy as glucose intolerance and excessive fetal growth. Obese patients have a higher risk of caesarean delivery and are more likely to suffer complications in postoperative wound healing. In the postnatal period, obese women are more likely to have venous thromboembolism, depression and breastfeeding problems. Newborn babies of obese females have higher body fat at birth, increasing the risk of childhood obesity. Although there is no particular mechanism responsible for these adverse perinatal outcomes in connection with maternal obesity, the available data indicate that increased maternal insulin resistance and associated hyperinsulinemia, inflammation, and oxidative stress appear to contribute to early placental and fetal dysfunction.
