The typical symptoms of GERD are heartburn, regurgitation of sour or bitter content to the proximal part of esophagus and throat. In protracted course gastric content can cause dysphagia or even odynophagia, which is considered to be a warning sign. Correlation between GERD and respiratory symptoms is relatively frequent. In some cases chronic cough, non-allergic asthma or recurrent infections of the upper and lower airways can be, in fact, manifestations of gastroesophageal reflux. It means that respiratory problems can also be the exclusive symptom by which GERD is manifested. In the first prospective single-center study we observed effect of GERD treatment on the course of chronic cough and other respiratory symptoms. We wanted to assess effectiveness of conservative treatment of GERD and of laparoscopic fundoplication.
