Authors bring a review of knowledge on the pathomechanisms, risk factors, diagnosis and management of venous thromboembolic disease in pregnancy and puerperium. Pregnancy is a known risk factor for deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism with potential of fatal outcome. Authors consider this issue to be highly important, because an increasing number of pregnant women with other risk factors for thromboembolism are currently real. However, consensus on recommendations based on EBM regarding thromboprophylaxis in pregnant women with risk factors absents in current literature and clinical practice differs.
