Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in Slovakia is a leading cause of population morbidity and mortality. The European Society of Cardiology published in 2012 guidelines for the management of acute myocardial infarction in patients presenting with the ST-segment elevation. The aim of these guidelines is an application of new development in the treatment strategies and pharmacotherapy in AMI patients. Special attention is paid to time delay in reperfusion treatment, new antithrombotic drugs regimens and primary PCI as a treatment of choice in AMI patients. Guidelines and recommendations should help physicians to make optimal treatment decisions in their daily practice.
