The Updated Sydney System has become the standard classification of gastritis especially in research studies. The system, however, lacks the element of prognosis and many pathologists and practicing gastroenterologists find them too cumbersome to be used in their routine diagnostic activities. In April 2005 an international group of gastroenterologists and pathologists met in Parma, Italy, and proposed a reporting system for chronic gastritis in staging. The proposed staging system can offer immediate perception of the extent of gastritis and provide useful information about gastric cancer risk. This can be achieved by regular dialogue and communication between the endoscopist and the pathologist using accepted terminology.
