The association between celiac disease and some malignancies is well known. Specifically there is a proved connection of squamous cell carcinoma of oropharynx and oesophagus, adenocarcinoma of small intestine and non-Hodgkinal lymphomas with celiac disease. Although the exact prevalence of malignant complications is not known, relative risk of developing any malignancy is supposed to be increased two- to threefold. Progress to malignant complicacy seems to be related to long-terming exposure of gluten, principally in non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL) and adenocarcinoma of small intestine. Anyway diagnostics of celiac disease in late adulthood increases the risk of complicating malignancies what alerts us to think about searching for them in these cases.
