Acute pancreatitis is a severe, however, potentially treatable disease. Besides preventive measures, an early diagnosis
of complications and correct stratification of patients in relation to severity of the disease decide about the final effect
of the therapy. Just early aggressive management of the disease leads to influencing the course of the disease and reduction
in mortality and morbidity. Unfortunately, there is still not an ideal marker to meet requirements of diagnosis,
stratification of complication identification.
Therefore, we search for possible diagnostic markers of early affliction or present morphological changes and complications.
The attention is paid to the identification of biomarkers, which reflect present known changes in acute pancreatitis
already on the cellular level. Promising there is the determination of biomarkers in blood serum, or urine in the
early diagnosis of the disease, including early identification of present necrosis when findings of imaging methods are
still negative, or the finding is unconvincing.
The submitted paper presents knowledge on possible identification and efficacy of some biomarkers nowadays. Despite
the promising results, other large randomised studies are needed to gain the most accurate data and allow for
origination of algorithms, which rank the biomarkers to the system of diagnosis and monitoring of patients with acute
pancreatitis.
