Obesity became a pandemic during last few decades. By its impact on health and financial resources it represents a heavy burden for the global population. Accumulation of fat stores and tendency to obesity are under genetic control and these features are present in all ethnic groups. In the same time, there are substantial inter-ethnic differences in anatomic localization, in which the fat is preferably stored and in metabolic-endocrine characteristics of particular types of fat pads. These factors create a substrate for important inter-ethnic variability in terms of predictive validity of different simple measures of obesity and in its cardio-metabolic consequences.
