Blood transfusion saves lives of thousands of people daily all over the world. Haemotherapy is accompanied by infection risks from its beginning. The transmission of syphilis was first confirmed in the 70´s of the 20th century, the transmission of hepatitis viruses later on. Fear for the transmission of infectious diseases aggravated after discovery of HIV in 1983. The last decades have brought implementation of prophylactic measurements to avoid infection transfer by blood products in order to reach virtual elimination of infection risks of haemotherapy.
