Lung cancer is the most common malignant disease with the highest incidence and mortality in the world. Therefore,
we consider it useful from time to time to try to summarize the current state of knowledge for a generally-oriented
reader. In this article we are focusing on the general characterization of the disease. We are providing an overview
of the epidemiology, pathology, molecular biology, clinical symptoms and TNM classification. To keep the size of the
contribution reasonable, the issues of diagnosis and therapy will be discussed in a separate en_article.
