Intestinal insuficiency and failure has increasing incidence in the last decade. It is related with increasing of oncological,
cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s disease), and with longer survival of polymorbid patients.
Intestinal failure is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, reduced quality of life and high health care
costs. Management of the intestinal failure requires multidisciplinary and multiprofessional approach.
This article is the short manual for the internists and the general practitioners, how to assort and to manage the patients
with intestinal insuficiency and failure. The article contains two parts:
1. part includes definition and the basic management of intestinal failure.
2. part includes rare therapeutic modalities of the intestinal failure and complications of the home parenteral nutrition,
which the many specialists can solve, apart from nutrition centers.
