Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the digestive tract. They are defined as tumors of mesenchymal origin, showing a mutation of gene receptor of tyrosine kinase c-kit or of a platelet derivated growth factor receptor alpha (PDGFRA). The most common symptom is gastrointestinal bleeding, of varying extent, from the occult to the massive, manifested by hematemesis or melena. Their treatment is primarily surgical. We present a case of 35-year-old man, who was admitted to surgical department for melena, without clarifying the source of bleeding. Because of development of hemarrhagic shock urgent laparotomy was indicated. In view of the unknown etiology of bleeding (we supposed vascular malformation considering the surgical resection and histopatology), examinations, including enteroscopy, were supplemented, with the finding of GIST with consecutive surgical resection. In article we reported an overview in literature.
