Kidney transplantations have been performed in the Slovak Republic since 1972. The results of graft survival are comparable with those in other European countries. However, the number of transplantations is low as a result of low number of performed harvesting. The reason is ignorance of the problem not only in the population but also in paramedical workers. Knowledge of Slovak legislature, ethical approach, team work of specialists in transplantation centers and all physicians is required to improve this status quo. The article presents basic problems and focuses on aspects that are importatnt in out-patient care.
